KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- • Doing clinical work including evaluating patients, evaluating eye conditions, and prescribing appropriate treatment.
- • Performing both major and minor eye surgeries that are within the ophthalmologist’s professional ability and monitoring/sharing the outcome of such interventions.
- • Supervising other clinicians and other eye care team in the department.
- • Being available to be consulted by other clinicians.
- • Maintaining professional standards by providing guidance to other clinicians.
- • In-service teaching/training of ophthalmologic clinical officers, interns, and nurses.
- • Participate actively in training of residences, Master of Medicine students.
- • Performing any other duties incidental to the above as may be assigned by the Head of Department from time to time.
- • Innovate new ideas or methods to improve patients’ outcome.
- • Regularly conduct self-audit and share with the team.
- • Productively engage in research to better patients’ management.
- • Suggesting and supporting the development of income-generating activities to ensure sustainability and growth of the unit.
- • Participate actively in outreach activities.
Job Qualifications / Skills
• Administrative and management experience.
• Clinical and surgical teaching experience.
• Knowledge/Skills Requirements
• Surgical competencies, including MSICS, glaucoma surgery, basic eye lid surgery, YAG, excisions. (Strabismus surgeries, phaco, diode laser procedures, and vitreoretinal surgeries are an advantage.)
• Good writing skills and ability to develop meaningful full concepts, proposals, and concepts.
• Self-motivated and able to organize team work.
• Strategic thinker and results oriented.
• Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and targets.
• Persistence in task.
• Flexibility.
• Ability to handle conflict and criticism.
• Good computer skills.
• Good communication skills.
• Education Requirements
• Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology
• Medical degree including 3-4 years specialized training in ophthalmology (Residency or MMed Ophthalmology).
• Fellow of COECSA or recognized subspecialty is an added advantage.
• Willingness to subspecialize after a period of time will be highly rated as an added advantage.
